“WHEN HE WAS A BABY I BROUGHT HIM TO THE GYM NURSERY.”

Slide33BY: You have managed to merge your immediate family into your Bodybuilding experience in an awesome way! Your son seems to always be on hand with you backstage and I have seen many photographs of the two of you celebrating bodybuilding and fitness. I take it your son is a big fan?

KF: My son Shane is a huge fan of Natural Bodybuilding. When he was a baby I brought him to the gym nursery. When he grew out of that stage I collected equipment and trained at home for eight years.

At 42 when I decided to compete, Shane came to the gym with my husband and myself and started training. I taught him the importance of proper form.

“FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS SHANE HAS BEEN MY BEFORE SCHOOL TRAINING PARTNER. HE GIVES AN EXCELLENT SPOT.”

Slide34He loved the idea of getting strong. Genetically he’s built like my husband, a very lean ectomorph. The training gave him confidence and he saw results quickly. That was 6 years ago.

For the past four years Shane has been my before school training partner. He gives an excellent spot. At 18 he’s now stronger than I am and we enjoy giving each other a competitive push.

When he applied to Mass Maritime Academy this past winter his essay was about how important Natural Bodybuilding is to him and how it has taught him organization, patience, trust and integrity. He was accepted and will attend next fall.

I will miss my early morning partner when he’s in college for sure but I am so happy that the sport brought us so close. He is also very involved backstage and the only person I take with me when I compete. My husband is very supportive but went back there once and was all set. [laughs]

“ARNIE ONSTAGE IN POSING TRUNKS WOULD BE HYSTERICAL AND QUITE ENTERTAINING! AS FOR SHANE, YOU NEVER KNOW.”

Slide35BY: I love it! And congratulations to Shane! Who is going to spot you now and help you out backstage? And if you don’t mind me asking, what happened during your husband’s first and only backstage experience??? [laughs]

KF: I know! It’s always better when Shane’s around. As for my husband Arnie, he says he “hates rice cakes and the smell of unwashed bodies and tanning products.“ [laughs]

BY: Well, I can understand that! [laughs] So, I guess it is safe to assume that Arnie wont be donning a pair of posing trunks and getting on stage anytime soon! How about Shane? Does he have any interest in competing in the future?

KF: Arnie onstage in posing trunks would be hysterical and quite entertaining! As for Shane, you never know. He really talked about it a few years back. We will see what the next few years bring as a Mass Maritime Cadet. I know that he will always train and I know that he fully understands and respects what it means to be a lifetime Natural.

“I’VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE A STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM WITH MY HUSBAND AND SON.”

Slide36BY: Excellent! What advice would you give to other families out there who have a member (or members) who are competitors? What do you see as keys to merging and balancing family with competing?

KF: I’ve been very fortunate to have a strong support system with my husband and son. I know this and I would never take it for granted. At the same time, being a Pro Bodybuilder is just a piece of who I am. Even when in prep for the WNBF World Championships I am a mother and a wife first. My career as a music educator is fulfilling and important to me. It’s my job. This is my outlet, a hobby that I work into my schedule.

I look for ways to organize my life to make it easier. When I prep meals I cook two different ways. My meals and theirs. It’s a few hours once or twice a week that saves so much time for me during the week. I train in the early mornings so I can come home from work at 4pm and hang out with my husband. Off-season we enjoy eating out and “happy hour.”

When in prep, I still go out and enjoy dates with my husband. I just stick to the diet. I don’t waste time in the gym. I get in, work as hard as I can and get out. I’m a Bodybuilder so I don’t waste time doing cardio. I don’t need it if I keep my nutrition right. It took me about two years to find the balance to make it all run smoothly. 2015 will be my seventh year. I love what I do. All of it. NMI
